Hi, I'm Katie Curtin... I'm a certified coach, an author, and multi-disciplinary artist who spends my time between Canada, the US, and Mexico. I've helped hundreds of changemakers and entrepreneurs to birth their creative projects into the world, including to create their best-selling books.
My multi-faceted career includes working professionally as a writer, researcher, journalist, and editor, as well as being a success and breakthrough coach for one of the leading US coaching companies for conscious business owners.
As a coach, I'm known as a powerful breakthrough coach, who gets to the heart of the matter quickly while infusing my collaborations with wisdom, fun and a touch of irreverence (just to make sure things don't get too serious!). I'm the founder and co-host of the online Creativity Café, which features discussions with artists, thought leaders, and innovators.
I've developed a unique form of theatrical and healing “rants,” which I perform at a wide variety of venues, on topics that range from the deeply personal, to the social, and political.
My first book, "Women In China," published at the age of 24, went through three printings and was translated into French and Swedish. My latest book "The Happy Well-Fed Artist: How to Get Your Creative Projects off the Ground and into the World," was on the Amazon Best-Seller list.
MY JOURNEY WITH BOOKS As a child, I dreamed of writing books. I read 4-5 books weekly and pretty well went through the children’s library. Conventional schooling and other stuff, however, got me afraid of writing. I remember crying on my bed when essays were due. I would take hours even days to write and rewrite a paragraph. Nothing got written until the last day or so when I would pull all-nighters and finally get in the assignment. While I got good marks, the process was very painful.
I’ve learned a lot since then, and don’t suffer the same agony when I write. In fact most of the time it’s pleasurable.
At 24, I wrote my first book, "Women In China" which was published by Pathfinder Press. I went on a book tour across Canada and had many radio and tv interviews. I felt proud and happy.
Over the years, "Women in China" went through three printings, was translated into French and Swedish, and an excerpt published in Readers Digest International. It was even adopted for high school curriculum, as well being a source on the topic for many academics, as well as activists. Years passed. I had stints working as a history researcher, journalist, and editor. I wrote articles, papers, and blog posts. I had some short works published in an anthology. I wrote and co-produced a play "The Sorrowkeeper."
Parenting, art projects and learning, along with the challenges of running a creative business took up my time. With many interests, both as an artist and activist I didn't lack for things to do. I was certainly living my passions.
But always at the back of my mind, I had a book or two in my head. And they just never got written, and it weighed on me.
Finally, I got off to a great start. I wrote a rough draft in a weekend of "The Happy Well-Fed Artist" but after that, things slowed down to a crawl.
Unlike my first book which got written and published relatively quickly, it took me over seven years to finish and publish my "The Happy Well Fed Artist." Not because I was working the book all the time. Far from it.
Three major things got in my way:
my mindset
a lack of the systems in place to ensure I did the work
and a feeling of complete overwhelm around publishing in today's rapidly changing publishing world
I spent thousands of dollars and hours figuring this out. I now know only too well the pitfalls of writing and publishing. I've established amazing connections with people in the book publishing industry in areas that aren't my expertise. (One of my learnings is that it's best to spend more on getting help from professionals in the field, than trying to save money by learning every aspect yourself)
I continue to be an avid book reader, both in digital and print form and feel that through putting out books of our deepest work we can help bring about planetary change.
